First, if you haven't already done-so, you'll need to read the fleet's rules. You'll also need to come-up with the information about the character you will play. You'll need to decide his or her age, their species, do they have children, are they married? These are all questions that you can answer by making a character-biography (history).
You will be contacted by a staff member, who will ask you what ship you would like your character to join. You will be given a rank, and after being assigned your ship, you will be able to start simming.
Most characters start out at the rank of ensign or private (if a marine), except in special circumstances.
It is best to make a post on the board for the ship you are on, introducing yourself to your fellow crew-mates so they will know who you are. This makes getting to know you easier for everyone, and helps you gain friends easier....sort-of like "breaking-the-ice."
To begin-with, you will be assigned to your ship, and after a short period of time, allowing you to get to know everyone, and allowing people to know you, your account will be upgraded, allowing you more access to other parts of our fleet, where you'll be able to do everything from write fan-fiction, participate in pubic discussions, play music, look at videos, look at fan-art, or even play video games.
Most importantly, remember to:
Have fun.
